The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), says meningitis has killed 156 people nationwide, with 1,858 suspected cases recorded in 23 states.
The NCDC’s Sunday report covers October 2024 to March 2025. States with the highest deaths include Kebbi (67), Sokoto (33), and Katsina (16). The national fatality rate stands at 8.4%.
The agency cited challenges like poor data reporting, inadequate case management personnel, and low health-seeking behavior. Over one million doses of the Men5CV vaccine were received on Friday from the Gavi global stockpile.
The NCDC says it will continue advocacy, support states, and scale up response and risk communication activities.
