The draws and distribution of team jerseys and four balls each to the teams for the primary and secondary school students for Academicals Cup 2021 has taken place.
Anambra State Sports Development Commission with Anambra State Football Association held the event at the Secretary to the State government conference hall, Government House, Awka on Thursday 5th August 2021.
Following the draw, the four teams in the U-13 Primary school category male semi-finals are:
Eri Primary School, Aguleri, Umuogali Primary School, Oba, Eziagulu primary school Ekwulobia and Community Primary school Orsummenyi.
The U-17 females are Washington memorial Grammar school Onitsha, Community Secondary School, Isuofia, C.R.C Amesi, and Community Secondary school Azia while the Male u-17 are Bubendorff Memorial Grammar School, Adazi Nukwu, Fr. Joseph Secondary School, Aguleri, Washington Memorial Grammar School Onitsha, and Aguata High School, Aguata.
Anambra state Chairman Sports Development Commission, Chief Tony Oli stated that the government is fully committed to developing grassroots sports in the state with the grassroots sports competition it has organized in the past. He also said that the Commission is developing players from the grassroots to the National and it helped in gathering them together for the national youth games.
Chief Tony Oli also gave his report on his visit to Anthony Okafor from Father Joseph Secondary School, Aguleri. Anthony Okafor bagged a scholarship to a Turkish school in Abuja from the 2019 edition of the Academicals Cup. He said his visit was to monitor Okafor’s progress. Okafor is a goalkeeper who was discovered from the 2019 edition of the Academicals Cup with the partnership of Fidelity Bank Plc and Anambra state sports development Commission.
Sports director Mrs. Faith Okowonna Encouraging players and coaches to maintain discipline, punctuality and obey and maintain the rules of the round leather game, Mrs. Faith Okowonna commended them, the sports commission, and Fidelity Bank for their support.
