The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Anambra State, over the weekend, distributed Palliatives worth over one hundred and twenty-five million naira as Post COVID-19 Lockdown Intervention Funds to help the needy and vulnerable in the State.
In a Press Briefing at the Party’s Secretariat in Awka, the State Chairman of the Party, Chief Ndubisi Nwobu, said the PDP in Anambra State was aware of the challenges facing the less privileged, hence their decision to donate the funds to give succour to enable them to get back to their feet.
He commended the Federal and State Governments for their efforts as well as those he described as heroes and heroines in the field, the health workers who, he noted are in the forefront of the fight.
Chief Ndubisi Nwobu who inaugurated the Welfare Committee headed by Barrister Mrs Chidi Onyemelukwe, further thanked all Ndigbo Anambra who inspite of the difficult times, made noticeable and laudable sacrifices to help reduce the hardship most people are facing at this time.
In her speech, Barrister Mrs Chidi Onyemelukwe disclosed that the party plans to establish
COVID-19 testing centres in the state within 21 days, and appealed to the Federal and state governments to provide them spaces in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu 0jukwu University Teaching Hospital, in Awka or any of the hospitals in Anambra State, donated to the Federal Government by the Catholic Church, for the purpose.
She noted that Anambra State, owing to its economic and commercial importance to the nation, deserves to have a standard COVID-19 testing laboratory in place.
On the modalities for distributing the funds, Mrs Onyemelukwe informed that each community in Anambra State will get the sum of N300,000, while at least 60 less privileged persons/families in each community will receive 5000 naira each.
Also speaking the Secretary of the Committee, Barrister John Okoli-Akirika, listed some of the contributors to the fund were former governor Peter Obi, who donated 40 million naira, as well as Senators Stella Odua and Uche Ekwunife who donated 10 million naira each, among others.
