Anambra State Government has warned youths against indulging in illicit drugs in view of its ugly consequences.
The Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Professor Theresa Obiekezie, gave the warning at a one-day sensitization and awareness programme organized by the state government through the Ministry of youth empowerment and Creative Economy, which took place in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The Commissioner said the awareness and sensitization programme was aimed at educating the youths on the inherent dangers of drug abuse, cautioning them that drug abuse poses enormous danger on one’s biological, psychological, social and economic life.
Professor Obiekezie regretted the increase in the abuse of methamphetamine, which he observed, has destroyed many youths, led to vandalization of public property, ignited various degrees of violence, among others, explaining that the workshop was part of Governor Willie Obiano’s efforts in fighting crime and criminality in the State.
In their various paper presentations, resource persons including the State Co-ordinator of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Idris Musibau, represented by Dr Chinwe Thompson, as well as Anambra State Recruitment Officer of the Nigerian Army, Major Samson Enye, attributed the increasing rate of crime and criminality, rampant insanity among the youths, to abuse of drugs, and warned youths not to take drugs without physician’s prescription.
In a remark, the Traditional Ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka, commended the state government for the initiative aimed at saving the youths from destruction, and advise government to engage community leaders in the fight against drug abuse to achieve better results.
