The award of the Nigerian National Order of Merit, NNOM, which is the country’s highest honour for intellectual and artisitic achiever conferred on Professor Charles Ejike Chidume , has brought great joy to Ndi Anambra.
An internationally recognized mathematics professor, Chidume won over 1,200 contestants to receive the honour on February 8 at State House Abuja.
Professor Chidume who hailed from Nimo began his training at University of Nigeria Nsukka and went on to get further qualifications from international schools. Professor Chidume died at the age of 74 on October 7,2021 . Before his death, he served as the acting President of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.
The NNOM honour is only given to the living but he received it because he was selected as a laureate by President Buhari in 2020 while he was still alive.
Expressing his gratitude, Governor Willie Obiano said that Prof Chidume has helped to elongate the list of winners of Nigeria’s most prestigious award for academic excellence from Anambra state.
It will be noted that Anambra and Ekiti states by ha are states with the largest numbers of the 79 persons who have received the NNOM since inauguration 43 years ago.
Professor Chinua Achebe , author of Things Fall Apart was the first recipient of the honour when it was established in the late 1970s before General Olusegun Obasanjo left office.
