Just days after the Delta State Government shut down a primary school in Asaba owing to the death of a 19-month-old pupil, Obinna Udeze, who died after being flogged by his teacher, the Lagos state government has sealed “Unic Vilos Montessori School,” Maza Maza, over the flogging of a two-year-old child, Cherish Ohamadike by her teacher, Miss Joy Igile, who inflicted marks on her back.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo, besides the crime committed, the school also operated without approval and the Lagos State Government was working to clamp down on such centres of learning.
Narrating her ordeal, the victim’s mother, Faustina Ohamadike – who reported the incident – said although she was initially reluctant to take up the case, she decided to share her daughter’s story online after she was threatened by the perpetrator.
Cherish’s family lives in the same premises as the proprietress and the teacher who allegedly gave 24 strokes of the cane, with the school where the incident happened just opposite their house.
Meanwhile, the victim’s parents have confirmed that a combined team of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, the Domestic Violence and Response Unit, and the Ministry of Youths and Social Development, arrested the teacher and proprietress, and while the proprietress was released earlier in the week, the teacher is still in detention as the they seek justice.
