As Nigeria prepares for the general elections in February and march, 2023, Uzodinma Iweala, son of World Trade Organisation Director General Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has called for the need for Nigeria to start over . He made the declaration in an article titled, ‘Nigeria’s Second Independence: Why the Giant of Africa Needs to Start Over’ published in the American Magazine of International relations and United States Foreign policy.
He said that Nigeria’s political system defies neat packaging , stressing that no individual , however well intentioned can fix the nation’s challenges. He said that nothing should be off-limits for discussion, which includes the dissolution of the country. He also stated that Nigerians should ask themselves if they want the patchwork entity named Nigeria to remain Nigeria, given that the country is the arbitrary product of colonial boundaries.
Uzodinma said that in the quest to form a working system, Nigeria citizens should not limit their thinking to outdated and flawed U.S and European models of democracy.
Uzodinma Iweala won the Hoopes Prize and Dorothy Hicks Lee Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis while in Harvard, in addition to other honours. He is also the author of Beasts jof No Nation.
