The Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has officially admitted as well as inducted newly elected Presidents-General into her association with a charge on the new entrants to champion community development in their respective localities.
Performing the induction ceremony of the new PGs during her February general meeting at the ASATU national office Government House Awka, ASATU national president, Chief Barr. Titus Nnabuike Akpudo, who also doubles as the President-General Eziowelle community in Idemili-North local government area of Anambra state, said PGs are saddled with the responsibility of ensuring peace and harmony, equitable representation and rural development.
Akpudo, who pointed out that ASATU is non-partisan, urged the PGs to educate community dwellers to eschew all forms of electoral misconducts and malpractices; collect their Permanent Voter Card (PVC) and exercise their voting rights without any pecuniary influence so as to enthrone and entrench the change they so desire at the polls this year.
He said about 57 communities had successfully conducted town union elections and that new PGs had taken over from their predecessors even as he also mentioned that the Labour Minister’s community Alor and some other communities would conduct their town union elections in due course for effective and efficient running of community affairs while mandating the newly elected town union Presidents-General to be alive to their responsibility while maintaining peaceful co-existence in their respective domains.
