The process of applying for a foreign passport has been streamlined so that Nigerians do not need to use a middleman or agent. According to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the process for applying for a foreign passport has reportedly been streamlined so that Nigerians do not need to use a middleman or agent.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, the Comptroller of Immigration’s Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr. Tony Akuneme, revealed that the Service had made every effort to eliminate third parties so that Nigerians could apply for passports from the comfort of their homes using a laptop or smartphone and making payments online.
He also said that third parties don’t have an idea of the information entered into the application, which can result in somebody having issues with his or her National Identification Number (NIN).
Akuneme stated that the NIS is committed to curbing corruption and other illicit acts in the service and is increasing awareness so that people will be informed.
He encouraged Nigerians not to patronize agents but to fill out their forms themselves, bearing in mind that they have officers watching, and these agents know they are being watched.
He also encouraged Nigerians to notify the NIS when such agents take money from them.
Currently about 80 officers of the agency have been arrested for various offences in relation to issuance of passports.
