The Government of Anambra State has restated its commitment towards promoting the inclusion of persons with disability as a component in national policies and programmes while protecting their right and dignity.
It described persons with disability as the most vulnerable group in this pandemic and promised that his administration will always support them at all times.
He called on the disability community to heed all the directives on COVID-19 to Stay Safe and Alive, as well as prevent its spread, noting also their peculiar challenges in the fight against the disease due to their individual conditions.
Governor Willie Obiano who stated this while inaugurating the State Disability COVID-19 Response Team at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center in Awka reaffirmed that the fight against the pandemic will be intensified with recommended measures, keeping in mind the economic and social wellbeing of its citizenry.
The Governor represented by the Special Adviser on Disability Matters, Barrister Chukwuka Ezewuzie, pointed out that the relaxation of the lockdown measures in the state does not mean a triumph over the deadly virus.
Inaugurating the committee, a member of the State Action Committee Against COVID-19 who doubles as a Special Adviser to the Governor on Indigenous Medicine and Herbal Practice, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, advised the committee to use the working document as outlined in discharging their duties.
Dr Ibezim reminded the committee that it was their mandate to ensure that persons with disability in the state were well informed and participate actively in all activities towards the fight against Coronavirus for their wellbeing.
In his speech, the chairman of the Steering Committee, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, on behalf of his team, appreciated the Governor for finding them worthy to serve the state in that capacity and pledged to discharge their duty with honesty and commitment.
