The Archbishop, Province of the Niger, and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, has described Nigeria as a sick country that prayers may not heal.
He made his feelings known in his address to mark the 60th Independence anniversary of the country.
Archbishop Ibezim observed that the trouble with Nigeria was that most people were religious without having ethical values.
He was of the opinion that Nigerians, especially, the leadership had offended God and that the prayers of sinners would not heal any nation, as such prayers were abomination before God.
He asserted that an honest assessment of Nigeria shows that the country is elderly but sick in the sense that at this stage, Nigeria should have grown a mature nation that would have been able to contain its own problems and live a healthy lifestyle.
The Archbishop however, declared that Nigeria of today is sick – economically politically, and spiritually, noting that religion without ethical values has no meaning because God abhors corruption; and wickedness.
He reminded them that there is a day of accountability, therefore, leaders should know that they are leading human beings and not animals and cautioned Nigeria to go back to God in sincerity.
