On Friday, the Biden administration announced a plan to eliminate single-use plastics from all federal operations by 2035, aiming to address the escalating global plastic crisis.
As the largest buyer of goods and services worldwide, this move is expected to influence global markets, encourage the development of sustainable alternatives, and cut emissions related to plastic production.
The administration highlighted the severe environmental and health impacts of plastic waste, noting that plastic production and waste have doubled over the past 20 years.
The new initiative includes phasing out single-use plastics from federal food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035.
Nonprofit Oceana reports that approximately 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the oceans annually. Christy Leavitt, Oceana’s plastics campaign director, praised the administration’s commitment.
