The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has issued a directive for demonstrators planning the nationwide protest starting August 1 to submit their names and contact details to the police.
Speaking in Abuja, the IGP urged Nigerians to exercise caution and reconsider joining any protest group to avoid escalating tensions.
He highlighted concerns about some groups advocating for violent protests, drawing parallels with recent unrest in Kenya, while others promote peaceful demonstrations with potentially violent undertones.
The IGP acknowledged the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but stressed the need for public safety and order.
He called on protest organizers to provide specific information to the Commissioners of Police in their states, including proposed protest routes, assembly points, duration, and contact details of leaders.
This measure aims to prevent hijacking by criminal elements and ensure the deployment of adequate police resources to maintain order.
The IGP also advised establishing clear communication channels with police to address any issues and minimize the risk of violence or property damage.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation with law enforcement to facilitate a safe and successful protest.
