The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for linking the National Identification Number (NIN) with Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s spokesperson, announced that all mobile network operators must complete this process by the deadline.

As of now, over 153 million SIMs have been linked to NINs, representing a 96% compliance rate, a significant increase from 69.7% in January. The NCC is working with the National Identity Management Commission and the Office of the National Security Adviser to address the remaining unlinked SIMs. From September 15, any SIM card not linked to a NIN will be deactivated.

The NCC urges everyone who hasn’t linked their NIN to their SIM or who has faced verification issues to update their details immediately. The commission also reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs is illegal and punishable by law.
