Commissioner Onyeka Pledges Support To COOU Faculty Of Pharmacy For Better Performance

Anambra State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Pauly Onyeaka, has advised graduating students of Pharmacy, Chukwuemeka Odumewu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, (COOU), who were recently inducted into the pharmacy profession to uphold the legacy of the noble profession.
Hon. Onyeka gave the advice at l the 3rd Oath Taking/Induction Ceremony of the 2023 Session of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the university, held at the ETF Auditorium, Igbariam, Anambra State.
The Commissioner, who doubled as Chairman on the occasion, described a pharmacists as disciplined and responsible persons based on the type of training they receive, which also has made it a competitive and noble profession with great potential in the society.
He further appreciated the wonderful job executed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kate Omenugha, adding that in no distant time, the institution will be ranked one of the best learning citadels in the country .
Delivering her speech at the event, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kate Omenugha, used the occasion to call on philanthropists to support the on-going development in the institution by inscribing their names on gold.
She said that COOU was named after an illustrious and famous icon, adding that considering what his name signifies, “we must not let the dream to die.”
She expressed joy that the university ranked 3rd best pharmacy faculty in the whole Country and out shined other pharmacy students from other bigger universities in the country.
Prof Omenugha congratulated the graduands and also shared in the joy of parents whose children were graduating as it is not easy to train a pharmacist.
She urged them to soar higher and shine brighter like eagles and falcons to bring glory to their alma mater and their families.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of COOU, Prof Theophine Akunne, noted that with the five years intensive and rigorous training which has equiped them with skills, lthey can now contribute to the global health care.
He admonished them to add value to the larger society and their alma mater that has made them.
Pro. Akunne applauded the impactful values of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Omenugha, especially her motherly impact which manifested in the 3rd position in the country at the Young Talents Pharmacists Competition in Lagos.
Speaking on the theme, “The Modern Day Community Pharmacy, Latest Innovation and Emerging Trends,” The Managing Director, Your Health Pharmacy Limited, Pharm Chinedu Nwankwo, described a Community Pharmacist as an expert who deals directly with people in a given locality, sourcing drugs apart from the hospital .
He further noted that in a hospital, pharmacists are the lifewire who are in the center of dispensing and prescribing drugs to patients.
Pharm Nwankwo highlighted other roles of the community pharmacist such as ensuring that different treatments are compatible, checking dosages, correct and safe supply of drugs, among others.
Pharm. Nwankwo noted that the role of the community pharmacist requires that government at all levels should enforce important health delivery system by maximizing health benefits by the patients and enhance the healthcare system.
Highpoints of the event were administration of Pharmacy Oath on the graduands by the Registrar of Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Pharm Ibrahim Ahmed, represented by the Director, Education and Training, Dr Tony Idoko, gifts and cash awards to distinguished guests and the best graduating student as well as a new price known as Overall Best Student Award which will not be based only on academics but on character, which was initiated by Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Onyeka.
