The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills, visited the Western Naval Command and the Regional Maritime Capability Centre on Friday. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between the U.S. and Nigeria, particularly in maritime security.
Ambassador Mills emphasized the importance of partnering with the Nigerian Navy to combat crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, including piracy, oil theft, and illegal fishing. He highlighted ongoing cooperation, including intelligence sharing and joint maritime exercises, to boost security efforts.
Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, Flag Officer Commanding, thanked the U.S. for its support in the region and discussed plans to upgrade Nigeria’s maritime surveillance capabilities. The U.S. also plans to conduct another Obangame Express exercise to enhance Nigeria’s naval preparedness.
