President Bola Tinubu has upgraded the title of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, from Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) to Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). This decision follows protests from lawmakers who argued that both the Speaker and Senate President should receive equal honors.Initially, during his Independence Day address, Tinubu awarded the GCON to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, while Abbas received the lower CFR title. The House of Representatives unanimously challenged this decision, prompting Tinubu to reverse his stance while on vacation in the UK.In a statement, Tinubu acknowledged the lawmakers’ arguments and corrected what was described as a historical oversight. The Speaker and other principal officers will be formally decorated with their new honors at a later date.
