The Norwegian Refugee Council, NRC, has announced the suspension of humanitarian activities in nearly 20 countries due to the US aid freeze under President Donald Trump.
In a statement, the NRC said this is the first time in its history it has been forced to halt urgent humanitarian work, affecting hundreds of thousands of people in conflict and disaster zones. The agency, which assisted 1.6 million people in 2024 through US-funded programs, said about 20% of its funding came from the US.
Already, aid deliveries to 57,000 people in Ukraine have stopped, with layoffs affecting workers in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, and Sudan. The NRC warns that if outstanding US payments are not made, more people will be left without vital assistance.
