The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has raised concerns over the heavy tax burden on its members, stating that excessive deductions on goods and services are worsening their financial struggles.
In a communiqué issued after its 50th Regular National Executive Council meeting at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, SSANU President, Comrade Mohamed Ibrahim, lamented that high pay as you earn (PAYE) tax, the hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) and numerous unexplainable are eroding workers’ meagre salaries.
The union also condemned salary shortfalls and incomplete payments through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), stating that these deductions have nullified the impact of the N70,000 minimum wage increase.
SSANU urged the government to implement a worker-friendly tax system to ease their hardships.
