Anambra NSCDC, NCCSALW Deepen Collaboration To Mop Up Illicit Small Arms, Light Weapons
The National Center for Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons has sought a more robust working relationship with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, in an effort to curb prolification of small arms and light weapons.
This was made known when Major General Okechukwu Ugo ( rtd) the South East Zonal Director of the center led a delegation on a courtesy visit to NSCDC State Command Headquarters, in Awka on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
During the visit, Commandant Maku Olatunde, the Anambra State NSCDC Commandant declared the Corps’ support for the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, noting that it is part of the assignment placed before it by the Federal Government to prevent and control proliferation of small arms and light weapons in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
He expressed concerns over the proliferation of light weapons among non-state actors, citing it as a key factor in the surge of violent crimes. He however commended the center’s efforts in tracking, monitoring, and controlling illicit arms, acknowledging its positive impact.
He assured that the NSCDC will continue to collaborate with the center to eliminate illicit weapons, ensuring the safety and security of citizens and their properties.
Responding, Major General Okechukwu Ugo (rtd), the South East Zonal Director of NCCSALW, said he was at the command to interact with the State Commandant and his lieutenants to solicit the collaboration, cooperation and harmonious working relationship, as well as getting the support of the command to enable the Zonal Office achieve its set objectives.
“We are here to seek possible ways to collaborate with the NSCDC in mitigating the troublesome menace of proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country. When operations are conducted, it is the duty of the center to mop up arms recovered and make them inoperable.
“Part of our mission is to initiate a sort of an interaction, to see how best the NSCDC can collaborate with us to sustain the tempo in mopping up light arms and other weapons in circulation for peaceful coexistence amongst the people in the country.” he said.
