Retired Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye has raised concerns over the severe understaffing and underfunding of the Nigeria Police, warning that millions of citizens remain unprotected. Speaking on Arise News Television, Adeoye noted that with just 300,000 officers for a population of 240 million, many areas are left without security coverage.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s approval for rapid recruitment but stressed that better training, equipment, and modern technology are crucial.
Adeoye also called for the death penalty for kidnappers, arguing that stronger deterrents are needed to combat the rising menace. His remarks follow recent security failures in Edo State, where 16 travelers were killed, prompting the suspension of a security commander.
