Nigeria has pulled out of the 2025 World Relays in Guangzhou, China, following delays in visa issuance to its athletes.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) announced the decision on Friday, blaming Chinese authorities for last-minute processing despite initiating applications as early as February.
The federation described the experience as embarrassing and physically impossible for team participation, citing wasted preparations, financial losses, and emotional distress. The AFN criticized poor communication, shifting requirements, and demands like police reports and bank statements.
Nigeria had planned to compete in four relay events with a 17-member team. The competition is set for this weekend, May 10 and 11.
