Rwanda has officially withdrawn from Central Africa’s main economic bloc, citing the group’s alleged bias in favour of the Democratic Republic of Congo amid ongoing tensions.
The decision follows escalating violence in eastern Congo, where Rwanda is accused of backing the M23 rebel group, a claim Kigali strongly denies.
Rwandan authorities said the bloc, Economic Community of Central African States, has failed to remain neutral and has instead taken sides with Congo, undermining regional stability.
The fallout adds to already strained relations between the two neighbours, with recent efforts at diplomacy showing little progress.
Rwanda’s withdrawal could have significant political and economic implications for regional integration and peace-building efforts in Central Africa.
Observers are now watching for the bloc’s response and possible mediation moves in the unfolding crisis.
