Crystal Palace has been demoted from the UEFA Europa League to the Conference League for breaching multi-club ownership rules. UEFA confirmed the decision on Friday, citing US businessman John Textor’s ownership of both Palace and French side Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League.
Lyon retained their spot as they finished higher in Ligue 1 than Palace did in the Premier League. Palace had secured European football for the first time after winning the FA Cup in May.
Textor’s deal to sell his Palace stake came after UEFA’s March 1 deadline. Palace plans to appeal the ruling. Nottingham Forest will now take Palace’s Europa League spot, UEFA sources confirmed.
