Marcus Rashford announced his arrival at Barcelona in spectacular fashion, netting twice in the space of nine minutes to inspire a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their UEFA Champions League group stage opener at St James’ Park on Thursday.
The England forward, on loan from Manchester United, struck in the 58th and 67th minutes to give the Spanish giants a crucial away win on his return to England. Anthony Gordon pulled one back for Newcastle late in the match, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.

Rashford’s first goal came when he rose above Fabian Schar to power a header past Nick Pope after Jules Kounde’s pinpoint cross. Minutes later, the 27-year-old produced a moment of brilliance, gliding past Sandro Tonali before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top corner from 25 yards.

The brace marked Rashford’s first goals in the Champions League since 2021 and extended his impressive record against Newcastle, against whom he has now scored seven times in his career.
Barcelona, who were missing Lamine Yamal due to injury, showed resilience after a sluggish first half, with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha testing the Magpies’ defence before Rashford took centre stage.

For Newcastle, who were making their Champions League return after failing to progress from the group stage in 2023-24, the defeat dampened the excitement of playing Barcelona at St James’ Park for the first time since 2003.
The victory boosts Barcelona’s hopes of going deep in this season’s competition, having last lifted the trophy in 2015. With three wins already in La Liga, Hansi Flick’s side look well placed to challenge on multiple fronts this campaign.
