Igbos In Akure Shut Shops, Join Nationwide Protest For Release Of Nnamdi Kanu

Economic activities were reportedly partially grounded in parts of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday, 20th October, 2025, as Igbo traders joined the nationwide protest demanding the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Major commercial areas in the city, including Oyemekun Road, Adesida Road, Arakale Road, NEPA, Old Garage, and Carl Street, witnessed the closure of shops and business outlets owned by members of the Igbo community.A visit to these areas by treasurenews revealed that several shops—especially automobile spare parts outlets and supermarkets operated by Igbo traders—remained under lock and key, leaving the usually bustling business districts unusually quiet. In contrast, shops owned by traders from other parts of the country were seen open for normal business operations, creating a visible distinction along major streets.

A resident who spoke with Journalists described the situation as “a clear show of solidarity” with the detained IPOB leader. “The Igbos here in Akure have always joined in any civil action calling for Kanu’s release. Today’s shutdown is their own peaceful way of lending a voice,” the resident said.

Meanwhile, there was a noticeable presence of heavily armed security operatives stationed at strategic locations across Akure metropolis, particularly around areas previously known as flashpoints for demonstrations.

Though no case of violence was recorded as of the time of filing this report
