Eligible voters in Anambra State who have not registered or have issues with their voter’s cards have been informed that the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, is on, so that they can go and register to obtain their voters card, to enable them vote in the 2027 general election, as well as subsequent elections.

Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dr Mrs Elizabeth Agwu, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists on Wednesday, 4th February, 2026, at the INEC’s Headquarters in Awka, urged all those who have attained the age of 18, who have not registered before, and those who had registered but have issues with their cards to take advantage of the ongoing registration exercise to go and register or make the necessary amendments.

Dr Mrs Agwu pointed out that those who had registered earlier, but have issues with their voter’s cards include those who lost their cards, those who did change of names, those who changed their addresses like states, towns and local governments, and seeking transfers, advising also that it is better for one to register at ones closest registration and voting centers.

She stressed the importance of voter’s cards, pointing out that aside voting during elections, voting cards are also used for identification.

The REC, however, warned against double or multiple registration which can lead to cancelling both or all the registrations.

Dr Agwu who informed that the registration commenced on 5th January, 2026, to officially end on 17th April, 2026, noted that at the initial stage, there was registration apathy as no registration was recorded in the first week, though there was gradual increase of eligible voters in the following weeks, stressing the need for active participation of eligible voters.

According to her, a total of 4,423 new voters have been registered in Anambra State within the first four weeks in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise, which, she said, is taking place in the 36 States of the Federation except the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, due to the Area Council Election scheduled to hold there this month.

The Anambra REC further informed Anambra residents that the CVR is taking place in all the Registration Areas, otherwise, called wards across the 21 local government areas of the State, and urged the eligible to go now and register instead of waiting till towards the end of the exercise as there is no guarantee that the closing date will be extended

Answering questions on allegations of vote-buying during the last governorship election in Anambra State, the REC said she did not receive any formal report, complaint or petition, and that she does not handle issues based on rumours.

She maintained that if there had been any evidence, she would have handled the matter officially.

The REC expressed satisfaction with the last governorship election as there was no record of technical glitches during the election.

Dr Mrs Agwu thanked the Press, for always being there for the Commission, as well as political parties and other stakeholders for their support.

She called for adequate publicity in view of the on-going voters registration so that Anambra will be among the states with highest number of voters registration.

In a vote of thanks, the Administrative Secretary, Mr Kenneth Obianyi, noted the critical role of the media in ensuring the success of the Electoral process through its basic functions of informing and educating the electorate, and called on journalists to intensify awareness especially at the grassroots to achieve the desired results.
