Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer from Premier League rivals Brentford, adding one of English football’s most decorated midfielders to their squad ahead of the new season.
The 36-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after Brentford agreed to release him despite having one year remaining on his contract.
Henderson, who has earned 91 caps for England, brings a wealth of experience to Chelsea following an accomplished career in both domestic and international football. He also featured for England at the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup, although his tournament was cut short after suffering a broken arm during celebrations following the Three Lions’ dramatic victory over Mexico.
Speaking after completing the move, Henderson said joining Chelsea was an opportunity he could not ignore.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he told Chelsea’s official website.
He also praised the club’s ownership for its ambition and commitment to returning Chelsea to the top of English and European football.
“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Chelsea have continued to strengthen their squad during the transfer window as they prepare for the new campaign under manager Xabi Alonso, with Henderson expected to provide leadership, experience and depth in midfield.
The move sees one of England’s most experienced players swap west London clubs in one of the summer’s most surprising Premier League transfers.
