The indefinite strike embarked by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has been suspended effective today, June 10, 2021.
The suspension was as a result of decision made by the 74 percent of members who voted in nationwide scheduled meetings for the purpose of deciding the way forward.
A memo signed by Shamma S. Kpanja, directed all acedemic staff in polytecnics nationwide to resume work on Thursday, June 10, 2021, that is today.
The suspension of the strike followed a memorandum of action the union reached with Federal Government.
Part of a press release by ASUP reads:
“As part of the efforts communicated by the Federal Ministry of Education, certain items have been fulfilled like the reconstitution and inauguration of governing councils and visitation panels in Nigerian Federal Polytechnics while we are led to believe that the release of funds for infrastructure revitalization and minimum wage arrears is currently being processed. Other items include the ongoing efforts at the review of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service for Polytechnics as well as the commencement of work towards resolution of the issues around CONTISS 15 migration arrears for the lower cadre. We also acknowledge the recent passage of the Bill for removal of the dichotomy against HND holders in the country.”
A letter by ASUP also indicated that national Executive Council will appraise the result afters three months within which it is expected that the Federal Government would have met the conditions.
ASUP General Secretary, Shamma Kpanja indicated that chapters that violated ASUP constitution shall be subjected to the provisions of the constitution.
Recall that ASUP embarked on strike on April 6, 2021.
