Gunmen numbering five on Wednesday afternoon shot dead a young man at the popular Aroma junction in Awka, Anambra state capital.
Reports said the gunmen intercepted the young man who is yet to be identified, under Aroma flyover and pursued him to the side before opening fire on him.
It was gathered that he was shot several times on the head and chest until he gave up the ghost.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was seen in some places in the Aroma area few hours before the attackers located and killed him.
An eye witness at Aroma Junction who spoke on anonymity told our reporter that she was at her business site, suddenly saw young men pursuing another young man.
She said that when she saw them pursuing the man, she thought they were his brothers who wanted to arrest him, maybe for running away from their family. She said that when she started hearing gunshots then she had to run into hiding so that they will not accuse her of seeing their faces because she was very close.
” I have been at this Aroma for years I have never witnessed this kind of thing,” she said.
Another eyewitness who almost fell unconscious after witnessing the horrible shooting said that she was face to face with the gunmen when they dragged the young man and started pumping bullets into him.
According to her, she ran for her life to avoid stray bullets.
“This is unbelievable, I cannot get myself now. This is terrible ” she said.
Another witness asked, “why people will be watching people shooting another without help”?
According to her, life in the state has become useless. “With what I saw today, there is no value for life in our system again,” she said. The attackers did not wear any masks and they did not come with vehicles. They just walked leisurely” she said.
Also, another witness said the boy had been giving his mothers much trouble, and that the killing could be linked to the cult war going on in Awka over the years.
A spokesman for Anambra state police command DSP Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incident said it was a cult-related issue.
According to him, the police preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was a cult-related war, adding that the police have taken charge of the area.
