No fewer than 50 persons died on Sunday following an attack by gunmen at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owaluwa area of Owo in Ondo state.
It was said the gunmen entered the church while service was ongoing, shot the worshippers and also used dynamites to blow the altar of church, causing parts of the altar to cave in.
Dead bodies littered the floor of the church as the injured ones were taken to the Federal medical centre, Owo.
Governor of Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN has condemned the attack at St Francis Catholic church, calling it an unprovoked attack and killing of innocent people..
The governor said that the vile and satanic attack is a calculated assault on the peace-loving people of Owo Kingdom who have enjoyed relative peace over the years.
In a statement made available by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, the governor said he had to cut short his party, APC national fassignment in Abuja to visit the scene of the attack and has spoken to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Most Reverend Jude Arogundade,
He said it is an unexpected development which has left him shocked.
However, he said they shall commit every available resource to hunt down these assailants and make them pay as they shall never bow to the machinations of heartless elements in their resolves to rid our state of criminals.
He commiserated with his people in Owo, particularly families of the those who lost their lives to this ugly and unfortunate attack, while also extending his condolences to Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye as well as the Catholic Church.
He urged the people to remain calm and vigilant and not take laws into their hands as security agents have been deployed to maintain peace and restore normalcy in the town .
