The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate has said that
Nigeria loses over $1.1 billion annually to malaria. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Advisory on Malaria Elimination in Abuja, Pate described malaria as both a health and economic crisis, with Nigeria accounting for 27% of global cases and 31% of malaria deaths.
In 2022 alone, over 180,000 Nigerian children under five died from the disease, which reduces productivity and exacerbates poverty. Pate emphasized the importance of grassroots support and partnerships, calling on traditional and religious leaders, private sectors, and international partners to join the fight against malaria.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, introduced an advisory body led by Prof. Rose Leke to provide evidence-based solutions and ensure malaria remains a priority in government budgets. This move showcases renewed push for a malaria-free Nigeria.
