The House of Representatives has formed a new committee to investigate economic sabotage in the petroleum sector.
Notably, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the former ad-hoc chairman and current Chairman of the House Committee on Upstream Petroleum, was not included.
This comes after the previous ad-hoc committee, which was investigating issues such as adulterated petroleum products and crude oil shortages, was dissolved due to controversies.
That committee, led by Ugochinyere, had called for the dismissal of NNPC’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari. However, a group of 50 lawmakers opposed this, citing parliamentary norms.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized the urgency of the investigation, calling for close collaboration with the Senate.
Julius Ihonvbere was named Co-Chairman of the new committee, which includes several other members. The committee has been directed to start work immediately to ensure accountability and transparency in the sector.
