A two-storey building under construction has collapsed at Umudim, Nnewi, raising fresh concerns over compliance with approved building standards and regulations in Anambra State.
Following the incident that recorded no casualties, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, visited the site to assess the situation and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The Commissioner warned that the state government would no longer tolerate construction practices capable of endangering lives and property.
“We will not allow developers to cut corners at the expense of human lives. Any development that fails to meet the required standards will face the full force of the law,” he said.
He stressed that building standards and regulations must never be compromised, noting that the consequences of substandard construction could be devastating.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enforcing strict compliance with approved building plans, construction standards and other relevant physical planning regulations across the state.
According to him, developers, builders and property owners must obtain the necessary approvals before commencing construction and ensure that qualified professionals are engaged throughout the building process.
The Commissioner added that the ministry would strengthen monitoring and enforcement to ensure that developments across the state complied with prescribed standards.
The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development said it would continue to discharge its regulatory and enforcement responsibilities to prevent avoidable building failures and safeguard lives and property.
The ministry further reiterated its call for responsible development, urging all developers and builders to “Build Right. Build Safe. Get Approval.”
