To mark this year’s Career Day, the Ifitedunu Town Union, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State has hosted all Primary School Pupils in the area to a maiden career seminar.
The event which held at the Civic Centre, Ifitedunu on Friday, July 10, brought together Government and Privately owned primary school pupils to listen and be tutored on different careers, how to make career choices and to ask questions on what have been bothering them in the career choosing scope.
While declaring the event open, the President General, Ifitedunu who also was the Chairman on the occasion, Professor Stephen Ufearoh, urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the State Government free education policy to bring up their children and wards with no fear.
He said the Ifitedunu Town Union also has been contributing in the upbring of the school children by sponsoring them in the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the University Matriculation Examinations.
“We have a scholarship scheme for those aspiring to get into the University and for those of them that are already in the University whose family are unable to sponsor; we have told them that it is important that everybody should go to school and that money will not be the problem, we are ready to help them.”
He explained that the career talks were designed to catch them young and instill the desire to go to school in the children.
“You can see in the society that the youths are going wild with many into drugs, kidnapping and other crimes so we have decided to catch them young by teaching them that it is better to go to school and study hard to become somebody useful in the society rather than joining to destroy the community through partaking in social malaise.”
The PG urged parents to adhere to taking their children through school, pointing out that though they may pick other careers afterwards, schooling is very important in the early stage of the children’s lives.
“They should let them go to school and have their certificates so that if there are opportunities in future for positions to be covered by educated persons in the society then those children can fit into those positions and represent the community and their families accordingly.”
Commenting, the Guidance and Counselors, Ifitedunu Primary Schools led by the Head of Department, Amb. Solomon Nwankwo, also urged parents to allow their children and wards to choose their careers themselves and desist from forcing them to a particular course different from their own choices.
Amb. Nwankwo also advised the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the area to assist the children in various ways to stay in line with the provisions of the school and the choices they have made.
He thanked the Town Union for assisting in organizing event and the LGA Education Authority for their cooperation in grooming the school children.
Some pupils also joined their voices to thank the organisers of the programme. They said they have stronger conviction after the talks that they can pursue their dreams and choices in education to the peak of it all.
There were drama, cultural dance, debate and choreographic displays at the tail end of the career talks.
