The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Anambra State Command, has kicked off the 2021 Ember Months Safety Campaign, aimed at sensitizing the general public on road consciousness.
The exercise took place on Thursday, 30th September, 2021, at the Dominion Park, Bridge Head, Onitsha, with the theme, “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience”.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Willie promised that Anambra State Government will partner the agency for effective service delivery.
Governor Obiano represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Dr Emma Ude Akpeh, ackonwkeded that transport is life as it helps to move people from one place to another.
He maintained that as the citizens celebrate the yelutitde, they must maintain safe driving protocols; noting the the campaign came at the right time when the state is conducting elections, urging everybody to ensure they adhere strictly to road safety rules and regulations.
In his speech, the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer for Edo, Delta and Anambra state, Assistant Corp Marshal, ACM Andrew Kumapayi, hinted that the campaign aimed at educating the general public on the dangers of reckless driving and road crashes, as well as possible safety measures to be taken.
The Assistant Corp Marshal adviced road users to avoid night travels, over speeding and rush hours, especially at nights because of insecurity.
ACM Kumapayi however, assured the public that the FRSC will “scale up twenty-four hour traffic surveillance, using specially trained personnel and modern traffic monitoring instruments in all the roads to minimize incidences of road crashes to prevent deaths, injuries and loss of property.
Earlier in an opening remark, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, CC, Adeoye Irelewuyi, noted that this year’s ember months campaign comes up within the electioneering period in the State, which is usually characterised by lots of functions and activities resulting to increase in human and vehicular movements.
The Corps Commander, assured that the FRSC would live up to its responsibility of sensitizing the public on the need to maintain safety consciousness and restore safe driving culture on the roads especially during the yuletide.
Contributing, Mr Chris Nwaorah, the Chairman, Dominion Park Bridgehead, called on drivers to adhere to the principles of road worthiness by ensuring that their tyres are up to standard, use of seat belt and maintaining regulated speed on the road.
He advised the agency to engage drivers in more trainings.
Also present at the event were, Anambra Integrated Development Strategy [ANIDS] Chairman, represented by Jude Eze, the Senior Special Adviser to Governor on Anambra Transport Maintenance agency (ATMA), Hon Angus Ibezim, Major B A adesoya representing 302 artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army, Onitsha, Sector Command Unit, SP EKEM, Anambra State Police Command representatives, transport Chairmen, Special Marshals among others.
Highlight on the occasion was cutting of ribbon to flag off the Ember Months Campaign.
