Anambra State Government has affirmed that the health of her citizens is of paramount importance which is why it has embarked on a polio prevention campaign to fortify children between 0 and 59 months against the deadly disease.
Disclosing this to newsmen in his office at the secretariat complex Awka, the state commissioner for health, Dr Vincent Ogochukwu Okpala, said the state government was committed to continually improve on the health indicators of the state especially as it concerns children.
Okpala explained that polio remains a public health emergency concern the world over and that the virus spreads from one unvaccinated child to another.
He further explained that the virus could cause paralysis in a child hence the need to vaccinate children against the killer disease and also protect them from physical deformities due to infection.
On her part, Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency Dr Chioma Ezenyimulu recalled that Polio was eradicated in August 2019 but because of the risk of an outbreak in some neighbouring states, Anambra state decided to fortify her children against the virus.
Ezenyimulu also revealed that the target population for the polio immunisation exercise were children below the age of five to ensure that they were all inoculated against the deadly virus.
