Report has it that the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim A Khan, has sought for authorization to investigate the abduction of students in Nigeria.
The development was announced on Sunday by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) .
In a letter dated October 22, Khan told SERAP that the criteria for a probe into a string of abductions have been met.
He also said that the next step in the judicial process is to prepare and submit a request to the Pre-Trial Chamber for authorization to open an investigation on Nigeria.
The Probe will also cover kidnappings in Northern Nigeria, closure of schools and the persistent failure of the Federal and state authorities to end the abduction.
SERAP also stated that the severe and lifelong harms that result from depriving children the right to education satisfy the gravity of harm under the Rome Statute.
SERAP also hailed the ICC prosecutor for taking a bold step in ensuring that persons responsible for the atrocities against schoolchildren are exposed. Deputy Director of the group also said they will work closely with the ICC to achieve their objectives.
Some School children are still in the hands of their captors as negotiations for their release continue.
