Members of the public have been warned of a cyber-group that has perfected a scheme to float ransomware to targeted organizational networks.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Director, Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde made this known in a statement on Saturday.

He said that the advisory from the Nigerian Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT) alerted that the criminal group is said to have been mailing out USB thumb drives to many organisations in the hope that the recipients will plug them into their PC and install the ransomware on their networks.
He said that criminals could soon begin sending infected USB drives to individuals.

According to the ngCERT, the USB drives contains so-called BadUSB attacks. The BadUSB exploits the USB standards versatility and allows an attacker to reprogram a USB drive to emulate a keyboard to create keystrokes and commands on a computer. It also installs malware prior to the operating system booting, or spoofing a network card to redirect traffic.

He also said that the numerous attack tools are also installed in the process that allows for the exploitation of personal computers. He gave such an example of the malware as the type which was contained in the post with a gift card claiming to be from Amazon.

As a way to avoid such ransomware, the ngCERT has called on individuals and organisations to avoid inserting USB drives from unknown sources while also encouraging internet users to report any incident of system compromises to ngCERT for technical assistance.
