EFCC Nabs Dozens of Students in Massive Invasion of Nigerian University
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested 50 persons, including 48 students from the Kwara State University (KWASU), for alleged involvement in internet fraud.
In a statement, EFCC said the operation, carried out by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC, targeted various hideouts in Malete, Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State, following extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering.
It informed that the arrests emphasized the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to curb internet-related offenses, which led to the seizure of nine exotic cars, twenty-four laptops, and numerous mobile phones from the suspects.
It further stated that operation highlights the agency’s resolve to tackle cybercrime head-on.
It, however, disclosed that the operation did not go without incident as a subsequent raid on the university’s off-campus hostels met with resistance from some students.
The Commission hinted that the resistance prompted the involvement of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and police officers, who allegedly resorted to using firearms and tear gas in the confrontation.
It was further gathered that the clash led to injuries among students, with some requiring hospitalization.
The EFCC announced that the suspects will face court proceedings once investigations are concluded, adding that the action represented a clear message to potential cybercriminals about the serious consequences of engaging in internet fraud.
