Days after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, thousands of convicted criminals were released from prison.

This has sparked reports of death threats towards female judges who sentenced the convicts.

They have been text messages, voice notes and unknown numbers bombarding the phones of the female judges .

Some of the judges were reported to have fled their homes and currently live in hiding and have changed phones to avoid the threats.

In the past 20 years, 270 women have sat as judges in Afghanistan. As some of the most powerful and prominent women in the country, they are known public figures.

In response to the accusations, Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi told the BBC that female judges should live like any other family without fear and no-one should threaten them. He said their special military units are obliged to investigate such complaints and act if there is a violation.

He also repeated the Taliban’s promise of a general amnesty for all former government workers across Afghanistan, stating that their general amnesty is sincere.
