On the Foreign Scene

In an international conference in Paris, donors pledged $2.1 billion in humanitarian aid for Sudan, grappling with famine amid a year-long conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron led the commitment, addressing urgent needs like food and medicine. Diplomats stressed halting attacks on civilians and promoting peace, as UN Secretary-General Guterres highlighted the crisis’s severity. Despite insufficient funding, the aid aims to assist millions affected by the conflict.

Members of Sudan’s civil society took part in the Paris meeting, but neither the Sudanese army nor its rival paramilitary were represented.

Conflict began in Sudan in April 2023 when simmering tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere across the country.

Efforts to end the crisis persist amidst regional conflicts, underscoring the urgent need for sustained support.
