The Nigerian Army(NA) has refuted a viral audio-visual report circulating online that claims it is recruiting Islamic fundamentalists and jihadists. The footage misleadingly shows an officer allegedly urging Muslim young men to join the military to protect and propagate Islam.
In a statement made by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the NA emphasized that the narrative in the footage does not reflect the values and standards of the Nigerian Army. He stated that the report aims to incite fear, sow discord, and erode public confidence in the military, especially among Christian and non-Muslim communities.
He also stated that the Nigerian Army upholds professionalism and impartiality, adhering to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that any deviation from the Army’s Standing Operating Procedures is met with appropriate disciplinary action, regardless of religious affiliation.
The public is urged to dismiss the misleading report and recognize it as an attempt to create division. Major General Nwachukwu reiterated the importance of unity in Nigeria’s diversity and assured that the Army remains committed to serving and protecting all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.
