Hon Nkechi Ogbuefi Launches Eye Clinic and Distributes Medicated Glasses To 10,000 Constituents

In a significant move towards improving eye health in her constituency, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi, the representative of Anaocha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly and Deputy Minority Whip, flagged off a visual impairment program on Thursday, October 10th, 2024. Through this initiative, over 500 constituents are set to receive medicated glasses and eye care services.

Speaking to journalists during the event, Hon. Ogbuefi revealed that her passion for health interventions, especially in eye care, dates back to 2010 when she began organizing health screenings through her NGO, Nkechi Ogbuefi Charity Empowerment. “In our society, many illnesses can be managed, but vision loss cannot be easily reversed, which is why I have decided to focus on visual impairment,” she explained.

Her decision to expand her efforts into eye care stemmed from a personal promise she made. “I vowed to God that if I won the election, I would continue to save lives,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of healthcare interventions.

The official launch of the eye care program allowed the lawmaker to assess the extent of need within her constituency. “Today marks the official start of this program, which aims to provide life-saving interventions to over 500 people, and we plan to reach more as we go along.”

Hon. Ogbuefi linked her initiative to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), stressing that governments alone cannot address all healthcare challenges. “Health intervention is one of the key aspects of the SDGs. NGOs, individuals, and stakeholders must raise awareness and urge the government to allocate more budgetary resources to eye care. After all, vision cannot be replaced like other ailments can be treated,” she added.

As part of her broader vision for health and social impact, Hon. Ogbuefi pledged to extend her eye care initiative to benefit over 10,000 people before the end of her term. The program’s first phase has begun in Agulu, and she plans to expand to other communities in Anaocha.

In addition to her efforts in healthcare, Hon. Ogbuefi highlighted some of her other social and economic achievements in Anaocha. She mentioned the renovation of the Nneogidi Primary Health Center and the Aguiyi Water Scheme, as well as her involvement in fencing schools through the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB).

Looking ahead, she expressed her desire to partner with private organizations to further improve the quality of education and infrastructure in the area. “We are working on public-private partnerships to renovate schools, pay school fees, and offer scholarships. By December, I plan to sponsor WAEC fees for students, ensuring they have the support they need for their education.”

With her impactful initiatives and a strong focus on sustainable development, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi continues to set a standard for community-driven leadership in Anaocha. Her dedication to improving healthcare and education is leaving an indelible mark on the lives of her constituents.

Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi’s ongoing work and her commitment to both eye care and social development in Anaocha. It highlights her leadership and dedication to uplifting her community through targeted health and educational initiatives.
