The European Union has announced an investment of 45.4 million Pounds in educational projects across Nigeria, aiming to enhance education quality, promote digital technology in teaching, and integrate green skills into the curriculum.

This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national goals and will benefit states like Kano, Sokoto, Jigawa, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Oyo, Katsina, Enugu, and Plateau from 2021 to 2027.

Additionally, the EU granted postgraduate scholarships to 142 young Nigerians for the 2024-25 academic session under the Erasmus+ programme.

Nigeria has topped the list of African beneficiaries for the sixth consecutive year and remains among the top five recipient countries globally.

At a pre-departure orientation in Abuja, EU Ambassador Samuela Isopi highlighted the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programme’s significance. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Isopi noted the programme’s transformative impact on individuals and institutions.

Most awardees will begin their studies in September 2024, attending at least three universities in different countries. The Nigerian scholars have been admitted to prestigious programmes such as Renewables-based Power Systems, Chemical Innovation and Regulation, Public Health in Disasters, and Sustainable Ship and Shipping. Graduates will receive a master’s degree jointly awarded by a consortium of universities.

Beyond scholarships, Erasmus+ supports mobility for researchers, students, and staff, building university and TVET capacities through joint projects with European partners. The Horizon Europe programme also offers opportunities for Nigerian researchers, particularly through the “Africa Initiative II.”
