Nigeria has won the bid to host the $5 billion African Energy Bank (AEB) in Abuja. State Minister for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, announced the news on Thursday via his official X account, emphasizing the bank’s crucial role in financing and advancing energy projects across Africa.
Nigeria emerged victorious over competitors Ghana, Benin, Algeria, South Africa, and Cote d’Ivoire. Lokpobiri highlighted that this decision marks a transformative era for Africa’s energy sector, promoting innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
Lokpobiri stated that this prestigious honor is a testament to the country’s leadership and commitment to the energy sector. The African Energy Bank will be a cornerstone for financing energy projects across Africa, promoting innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
The AEB, backed by the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) and funded in part by Afreximbank, aims to fill the gap left by traditional financiers withdrawing from oil and gas projects in Africa. Afreximbank has approved $1.7 billion as an investment for the Energy Bank, positioning it as a key investor.
With oil reserves of over 37 billion barrels, Nigeria’s leadership in the oil and gas sector positioned it as a suitable host for the AEB headquarters. This achievement symbolizes the collective efforts to harness and develop Africa’s rich energy resources for a sustainable future.
