The Federal Government has directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to enforce 18 years as the minimum entry age into tertiary institutions. Education Minister Tahir Mamman made the announcement at the 2024 JAMB Policy meeting in Abuja, emphasizing that this aligns with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
The minister expressed concerns about parents pressuring underage children for early admission. He reiterated that the 18-year benchmark is backed by Nigerian law and should be adhered to by all admission bodies.
Mamman also mentioned plans to incorporate skills training for students unable to gain admission into tertiary institutions.
