On the Foreign Scene
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that Lebanon is on “the brink” as clashes intensify between Israel and Hezbollah. The warning comes as Lebanese authorities report that Israeli airstrikes have killed 558 people, including 50 children.
Guterres made the statement during the UN General Assembly in New York, where world leaders are gathered for the annual event. France has called for an emergency meeting on the Middle East crisis, while the U.S. has cautioned against a full-blown invasion of Lebanon.
The ongoing conflict has raised fears that Lebanon could face a situation similar to Gaza, with the UN and global diplomats scrambling to prevent further escalation.
In addition to the Lebanon crisis, Ukraine remains on the agenda, with President Volodymyr Zelensky addressing the Security Council on Russia’s ongoing invasion.
