In a major development, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has introduced the “NAFDAC Green Book,” a database housing information on 6,432 registered pharmaceutical products for sale and distribution in Nigeria.
Mojisola Adeyeye, the director-general of NAFDAC, announced the launch during a media briefing in Abuja, revealing that the database will be accessible to the public for drug verification starting January 2024.
Adeyeye highlighted NAFDAC’s significant efforts in combating fake drugs, including the destruction of 135 truckloads of counterfeit and spurious products, with an estimated street value of N16 billion.
Raids in nine states uncovered counterfeit Diageo products worth over N38 million, while operations in Abuja and Lagos seized counterfeited products valued at over N200 million.
Attributing the rise in fake drugs to economic challenges, Adeyeye noted NAFDAC’s plans to phase out the production and sale of alcohol in sachets by the end of January 2024.
Additionally, the agency is gradually discontinuing certain harmful insecticides and pesticides.
Recent actions against fake wine factories in Abia state resulted in 10 arrests, with markets sealed pending investigation. .
