The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has dragged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to court over alleged missing public funds.

In a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is seeking a court order to compel NNPCL to explain and recover over ₦825 billion and $2.5 billion allegedly meant for refinery rehabilitation.

The funds, flagged by the Auditor-General in the 2021 audit report, are suspected to have been diverted or unaccounted for.

SERAP says failure to account for the money violates the Constitution and deepens poverty among Nigerians.

The group also referenced Aliko Dangote’s recent claim that despite $18 billion spent, the refineries may never work.

No date has been fixed for hearing the case.
